Their tireless effort resulted in a collection of Appalachian artifacts spanning over 250 years. Eventually they built the museum to both house the growing collection and to share the rich history of the region with others. Among the collection are artifacts from the daily lives of Appalachians, models of early structures, an extensive lithics collection, and exhibits dedicated to the military history of the region. As the Sherfey family grew they built around the cabin, protecting the original structure from the elements. Later the pristine log cabin was restored to its original condition and is now on the register of historical sites. Holley’s father was a lineman for the Clinchfield Railroad and George followed him into the industry. The timeless beauty of the powerful steam engine captured his heart. The family followed the railroad work to this area where George met his other life-long romance, the timelessly beautiful, energetic, and strong-willed Margaret Sherfey. George’s nephew, Keith Holley, was the train master at the station in Erwin, TN, when this caboose was being decommissioned in the late 1980’s. Keith helped him to acquire it as well as the track on which it rests.
